Sherman Oaks is community in the south east San Fernando Valley, that borders Studio City on the east and Encino on the west. The southern border is Mulholland Drive and the northern border is now considered to be Burbank Blvd, although the post office may yet consider Magnolia Blvd. to be the northern boundry. Sherman Oaks was the first community in the San Fernando Valley to undergo significant real estate development. For a smaller "home town" feel, the Tarzana Real Estate market is close in distance to Sherman Oaks.
The Los Angeles Aqueduct was proposed late in the first decade of the 1900’s. It was projected for 1913. In 1910, Los Angeles Suburban Homes Co. acquired 47,500 acres of the southeast Valley in anticipation of the Aqueduct and the boom it would bring to the area. The county of Los Angeles issued a tract map, Tract 1000, to the area in 1911.
One of the early owners of the LA Suburban Homes Co was General Moses Hazeltine Sherman. General Sherman carved out a purchase of 1000 acres of the development companies land for his own personal use, which he subdivided in 1927. In 1928, he sold the subdivided parcels for an incredible $780 per acre.
Sherman Oaks is home to one of the largest & oldest agricultural cooperatives in the country, Sunkist Growers. Nearby, the Fashion Square Mall has flourished with major department stores and smaller retailers. The Sherman Oaks Galleria is another regional mall in the area, and is probably the home of the 1980's term, “Valley Girl”.
Sherman Oaks has a rich history of celebrity residents and there are over 52,000 residents occupying over 8 square miles.
